"WREN" WILL I SEE YOU AGAIN.

Clear and bright start this morning so headed down to Hayle, first stop was the hide on Ryans Field but with the exception of 6 Wigeon and 3 Curlew it was dead. Maybe the very cold Westerly that was blowing kept everything under cover. Next stop was Marazion and guess what ? it was the same story all over again, so after an hour watching the Reed beds and seeing nothing of interest I got back to the car and drove back towards home to warm up. Now I dont like to waste a mornings birding so decided to stop at Tehidy Woods. As I started to walk through the woods the birds were singing and a lot of activity going on. Stopping in a Sunny sheltered spot by one of the pools I had a lot of common species, Robins, Finches, Tits, and a very nice though distant Chiffchaff and Jay. Next I noticed some movement on the ground to my left and turning slightly there was one of our smallest British birds a Wren foraging in the grass, so not having any photos of one this year it will be my post for tonight. Not the greatest pics but I still think its a lovely little bird.

BACK IN THE HARNESS

Finally got back into the swing of things today, and thanks to everyone for the good wishes. So took a trip up to Stithians Res to see what was happening, the main highlight was a Great Crested Grebe (Pics below) not quite close enough. Other pics are of some commoner species around the feeders. I can say I am almost back to normal and look forward to getting out and about.

RETURN TO KENNAL VALE PART 2.

Sorry for the lack of posts and comments for the last week, but I have done something thats given me a pretty painful back down one side and I have not felt like doing much.
So on Saturday morning loaded up with painkillers I felt I had to get out, so I decided to walk around Kennal Vale a small nature reserve in the village of Ponsanooth about 2 mile east from home. This reserve used to be a gunpowder manufacturing plant until the mid fiftes, now you can walk around it and enjoy all the old buildings and the fantastic views into the valley. The reason I did the walk was to find Dippers that live along the stream, I was successful and found one near the bottom of the valley. The last two images are of the Dipper and are only record shots as the bird was very wary and mobile. All other images are scenes from the reserve including the flooded granite quarry where all the stone for the buildings was mined, I have also include the old grinding stones left as relics. Sadly this old relic is still suffering so I guess I will keep taking the Pills.

ALONG THE GREAT FLAT LODE.

Cornwall has a long history for Mainly Tin and Copper Mining dating back to 1000 - 2000 BC when traders from the Eastern Meditterrean came to trade for these metals. The peak in the mining industry was in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was around Redruth and Camborne  where the largest lodes of these metals were found, although other mines in Cornwall produced vast amounts of these metals. In the mining heyday Redruth was the Tin Mining Capital of the World, and the old Mining Exchange and Assey offices can still be found in the town.

So this morning I took a walk along part of an area known as the Great Flat Lode, this area runs along the Southern bounderies of Redruth and Camborne and gives extensive views of the old mine workings. I started the walk from Buller Hill at the end of Buller Downs along the lode for about 1 1/2 miles until I was overlooking the small village of Carnkie. So here are a few images of this mornings walk.

SWANNING AROUND SWANPOOL/ MOOCHIN AROUND MARAZION.

Date Friday 5th Feb
Location Swanpool Nr Falmouth.

I had to make a trip to Falmouth to visit one of my sisters who lives at Swanpool, this was also an oppertunity to take a stroll around the pool and take some Photo's of a bird that has been there for about Two Months. The first image is of the location which is in a really nice setting, and just beyond the right of the image you can walk out of the carpark across the road and straight onto Swanpool Beach which is in Falmouth Bay.

SWANPOOL.

So now for the bird I came to see, this bird is not on the recognized species list for the UK as they are mainly escapees from captivity and they turn up every now and then. Still its  really beautiful and elegant even if it is aggressive to the local swan population. So here are a few images of the Black Swan and I think you will agree its a nice looking bird. Following this are a few images of  the local  residents.

Saturday 6th Feb
Location Marazion Marsh & Longrock Pool.

Had to get up bright and early this morning as I had to take Lorraine and her sister into Redruth Station as they were off for an overnight stay to London to take in one of the West End shows.
So my brief for the day was to go birding ( what a suprise ), so daybreak found me at Marazion where I spent a couple of hours wandering around. Not much different on the marsh the Bitterns were still flying around and a pair of Herons had started to build a nest. I did get one or two images which I have posted below.

MAGPIE. (Mmmmm Snails for Breakfast )

After a couple of hours I got chatting to another birder who informed me that there was a Black-Necked Grebe and Female Goldeneye on Longrock Pool, as this is just a short walk back along the marsh and over the railway line I headed off. Reaching the pool both birds were quickly located, I was pleased to see the Grebe as I wanted some photo's for my library. Both birds were only just in range of my camera and afforded only record shots three of which are below.

FEMALE GOLDENEYE.

After this nice session I headed back to Hayle for a traditional Cornish Pasty Lunch, then had a look on the Estuary but the tide was out and everything was very Distant so packed up the gear and headed home for a nice hot brew.

OVER TREWEY COMMON

I've just remembered I did take some photo's during last weekend, on Saturday morning I went down West along part of the coast road looking for Harriers and other birds of Prey.
The coast road runs from St Ives to Lands End, it is one of my favourite places to drive along and as I've banged on about before the landscape is breathtaking and photo,s cannot do it justice.
First stop was at the church in the small Hamlet of Towednack, where I scanned the surrounding area for my quarry with out success. The church was built in the 13th century with additions being built at later dates. It is claimed to be the last place where a sermon was conducted in the Cornish Language, although the church at Ludgvan makes this claim as well.

TOWEDNACK CHURCH.

After leaving Towednack I drove along Holman Moor and joined the coast road, After cresting the top of Eagles Roost ( I wish I had taken a photo of this point ) I pulled over to scan the area and was rewarded with a female Hen Harrier gliding down from the high moors to the farmland below. Next it was on through the ancient village of Zennor and then doing a left turn, the small by road rising steeply on its way to the junction to Trewey Common. Halfway up this hill I stopped to take the two images below giving views over Zennor and the Atlantic coast.

ZENNOR AND THE ATLANTIC COAST

Looking at the image above you can just make out the church at Zennor just to the left of the tree. and at the base of the hill on the right is the coast road winding its way along the bottom of the moors.

ZENNOR AND THE HIGH MOORS

Above is a continuation of the previous view and it gives the main features of this area, of a small coastal farming strip giving way to moorland inland. This is the prominent feature along this coast road. So now its upwards and onwards to Trewey Common.

TREWEY COMMON.
Above is the road across Trewey Common and it runs for about 1 1/2 miles before it drops back down to the coast road. As you can see this is a very barren and bleak enviroment consisting just heather and scrubland deviod of any trees. This last point is noticable all along the coast route the lack of any large trees. In the photo below you can see the edge of farmland giving way to this moorland area.

TREWEY COMMON.

So this was a brief look at part of an area that is good winter birding ground, In these places you are likley to find Raptors including Hen Harriers, Short Eared Owls, Merlins and Buzzards, along with large flocks of Golden Plover and wintering Thrushes.

GREAT START FOR THE YEAR

So after a busy weekends birding with sadly no photographs, I was wodering what am I going to post. So this is one for the Anoracks, I have my own ACCESS Database for bird sightings from which I can keep yearlists special bird trips or any other exercise I wish to do. It will filter out information from all fields IE: running totals on yearlist or birds seen at any given location throughout the year. The species field was typed in manually and contains 731 species covering Britain ,Europe,  North Africa, and the Middle East. In the Cornwall Database I have entered over 1300 Grid locations in Cornwall and am adding new ones all the time.

So for January I set myself a target of 100 species for the month, and on Sunday morning the total stood at 97 and I needed 3 more for the ton. So on daybreak I located Tawny Owl in the trees at the back of the house (With the help of a 1 million candle power spotlight. ), then Stonechat at Marazion. Thinking I would not make it I made a detour to Carbis Bay on the way home, and was rewarded with Razorbills and Guillemots far out in the bay, Hey Hey  made 101 well pleased with the start of the year.
So below is my month list for Jan and I hope it reads okay as I have just copied and Pasted it from Access, something I have not tried before.
