EAST POOL BEAM ENGINE MONOCHROME

This post show the Engine House at the East Pool Mine at Redruth, and the Cornish Beam Engine at Taylors Shaft. This engine was driven by high pressure steam a system developed by Richard Trevithick the famous Cornish Engineer, it had a 90inch single cylinder and a 52 ton beam and was used to pump water and raise ore and men from the mine.
Across the road can be seen Michell's Winder from 1887 these high pressure engines allowed mines to be worked at greater depth's and this one pumped water and raised Ore and Men from 1600ft below ground.
This Engine is still working for demonstration purposes but these days is driven by electricity.

  1. This is a perfect picture for monochrome. Interesting history about the building too.

  2. Oh dear! You were to quick for me, Monty and I missed commenting on your last post :(

I did enjoy seeing the lovely photos of the Cygnets at Stithians though, they look so sweet and I do hope they all continue to thrive.

Nice black and white photo here too of a subject which I confess to knowing very little about!

  3. Brilliant image Monts. I have spent a good few hours at the Black Country Musuem in the Midlands and they have similar pumping and winding gear on show as well as many other interesting things from the days of the Industrial Revolution.
