START OF THE YEAR 2010

Well its a slow start to the 2010 Photo Gallery, I guess all the birds are staying under cover in this cold weather. So later start than normal I went down to Carbis Bay hoping to find some Divers or Grebes to put on the new year list. Guess what ? Nothing ! but plenty of Shags and Cormorants with lots of Gannets offshore.

So next it was back to Lelant Station, this is the branch line to St Ives one of the most scenic train journeys in the UK giving beautiful views of the Hayle Estuary, Carbis Bay and the whole of St Ives bay.
The first two photos show the view from Lelant Station on the lower end of the Estuary,in the second shot just beyond where the two people are standing is Carnsew Pool where The Pacific Diver gave us those great views before Christmas. The third photo is from Hayle Causeway at the top of the Estuary and shows some Dunlin wtih one Grey Plover.
Needless to say there are thousands of birds over wintering at this time of year but with low tide everything was to far away to photograph.

The last two images are of a Collared Dove sitting in a Sycamore tree at the back of the house.

I mentioned a year list which I keep every year, starting a new one on 1st Jan, Running total so far 36 Species. Last year I had a poor one 148 species.

  2. You certainly have some wonderful places to see birds in your beautiful area. The last time we visited Cornwall (Gwithian Towans) which was some years ago, I said I could quite happily have stayed there for ever and I really could have!

148 species sounds pretty good to me!

Our garden seems to be full of Collared Doves and also Wood Pigeons at the moment, my goodness those Woodies can eat for England :)

    Lovely photos throughout Monty!
